More About the Artist: Jenene Crossan (Photographer)

In 2020, Jenene Crossan moved to Piha in search of recovery and solace, and soon found herself captivated by the raw beauty of her surroundings. Picking up a camera became a way for her to slow down, ground herself, and fully embrace the immersive nature of this place. Over time, photography evolved for Jenene into a profound exploration of texture and detail—the shape of whitewash, the intricate patterns left in the sand, the ever-changing colors of the sky.

Piha’s landscape has a soul of its own, with each day offering something new to discover. Every sunset, wave, and cloud formation brings with it a reminder of nature's fluidity and creativity. Through her images, Jenene hopes guests can take a piece of Piha with them, preserving memories of their time here that resonate long after they’ve left.

There’s a certain rugged isolation in Piha that evokes a sense of smallness yet reminds us of our profound connection to it all. Jenene aims to convey the extraordinary spirit of this place, capturing the way each sunset can awaken something deep within. Sometimes, she simply sits in awe of it rather than capturing it on film; at other times, the camera follows her everywhere, guiding her back to herself when she needs it most.

Photography has also helped Jenene find her turangawaewae—her place to stand. One day, while standing in the estuary, she felt a powerful, unspoken connection surge through her. It was as if she’d spent her life searching for this place without knowing it. In that moment, Jenene felt a sense of belonging—a comforting and deeply spiritual realization that Piha was, and always will be, her home.

Jenene hopes that guests at The Little Louise’s see in her images not only the beauty of this landscape but also the duality of nature’s force—its calmness and its power. Her work reflects the importance of respecting our earth, a connection she believes is essential to our existence.
